New visitors @ Schinias

After Spyros had told me that some fellow birdwatchers had seen a Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) in Schinias, I went to see myself this morning: It's actually a pair, and they were not too shy, so I could take a few photos. Most probably they belong to a population that had been introduced in southern Europe in the 1970's.

Here are some more photos from today, of visitors and residents from Schinias and Mt Pendelli:

Nai, katalava Ornithologo.

You're certainly right in what you're saying, and I won't publish photos of any "rarities" that quickly any more. It was a mistake on my behalf.

However, in Greece I do not really have the impression that the birds get heavily disturbed by the few interested people here. Distruction of the environment, illegal building, and excessive hunting seem to me way bigger problems than a few birders taking photos of a rare species. Maybe I'm wrong, but I sometimes think if a bit more people would be informed about wildlife and ecology in Greece, then awareness among the population could also rise. We're far from the numbers of birders of other countries here, so I doubt that disturbance is a big problem. Ignorance and lack of appropriate information however, are huge problems here in Greece. Secrecy is probably not the right way to solve them.

As you also might have found out, the species of the Sacred Ibis has escaped from a zoo in France about 30 Years ago, and is now expanding towards the east. In France there are already over 5000 individuals, and they cause severe problems when breeding among native species, like Herons and Egrets. In some places people have already started eliminating the Species because of this.

Anyway, it is true what you're telling me, and I will be more cautious in the future, wait a few days before publishing the photos, and not give the location too precisely. If I see a Slender-billed Curlew, you'll be the first to be informed...(Lol)!

Kind regards
Felix

Well ,

First congratulations for the great shots of this rare species.Truly a collectors item ! Second I understand the concern not to immediately publish photos accompanied whith location of sighting. I personally don't publish location of any photo I upload to my blog , cause I fear that a lot of crazy dudes are out there....and (especially) a lot of birds are in the hunters list , not that they have one , anyway . I have seen and heard of them shooting at anything and anywhere including national parks and reserves !!! Also in Schinias I have seen gun shells , which I really hope they are old but I really doubt it . That is why I have decided not to post any location. Also a thought:
If publishing such information draws 10 of what you think as "Κουτσή μαρία" , wouldn't it also draw aware people as well that can help protect the area? Yesterday I saw a family were the father was intentionally making noise to cause the birds to fly so that his family could see them , and I told them not to do it . And he didn't strike me as an Internet-computer-search for bird blogs guy. I am. So? get the point ? And is it disturbing of the rare species that bothers you only ? What about the others ?

On the other hand if you want to develop an ecological culture can you do it in secrecy ? A closed circle that knows and the rest are left out ? Personally I never new that Schinias had such a variety of species and although I started discovering it by myself some time ago , it is sites like this that has shown me this wealth of information. Am I the right person to know this ? Are you the right person to know ? Who appointed you protector over the others ? Sorry for the tone but I find it very frustrating to hear about a group of chosen people (???) .Maybe you should inherit the whole world and protect us , the rest , from ourselves .

Anyway not the place , not the time for philosophy.

Each one should do what each one thinks is best for the environment and we all benefit .It is a common cause.
